It’s good to be the boss.

That’s the quickest way to sum up a new report on executive compensation in Boston by the investment advisory firm Institutional Shareholder Services, which found CEO pay rose 9.2 percent last year — to an average of almost $5 million at the area’s biggest public companies.

Unsurprisingly, the list is top-heavy with the heads of technology and life sciences companies. If you somehow forgot how much money flows through our innovation economy, this is a good reminder.

ISS ExecComp Analytics culled financial disclosure forms for 56 local companies and calculated total compensation by including salaries, bonuses, stocks, options, and pensions.
