Today’s number is 1,000, which, the Department of Homeland Security disclosed today, is the actual number of businesses breached in a cyberattack that most famously struck Target last year.

Why it matters: It turns out that the attacks are “ much more pervasive than previously reported and hackers are pilfering the data of millions of payment cards from American consumers without companies knowing about it,” the New York Times reported.
